Mission: Survival of the fittest
Location: Ten Forward - Deck 10

Wulfgar strolled into ten forward and glanced around. He walked over to a table near the viewport that looked out into the vastness of the Delta Quadrant. His mind ran through what he knew of the Delta Quadrant from the lessons he had learned of Voyagers adventures and the Races they had encountered. The most friendliest of those being the Telaxians. Neelix was the one Telaxian who had been aboard Voyager and had stayed behind g to act as an official Ambassador for the Federation. He wondered if he was still doing that or if he had retired and who better to ask but that friendly new Ensign, Vereelix.

Wulfgar turned to look towards the door. He had sent a message to Vereelix to meet him here if he was available. All he could do was wait and think of what he wanted to ask.

Vreelix enter the lounge carrying his Padd, he had been studying micro-organisms and their effects after being exposed to various types of radiation. "Greetings Ensign Duergar, how may I be of assistance? Your message was quite vague."

Wulfgar, lost in thought, jumped slightly at Vereelix's voice. He looked at the Telaxian and smiled. "Ah Ensign Vereelix, thank you for joining me on short notice. Please sit down and you can call me Wulfgar." He said motioning to a seat and waving to the bar tender. "Two coffees, black and 5 sugar." He called before turning back to Vereelix. "I wanted to talk to you about the Telaxians. Is Neelix still an acting ambassador here or has he retired?"

"I believe he is still working as an Ambassador, but its hard to say. I mean he travels so much always off somewhere. I've never met him and I've never seen him," Vereelix replied after sitting down. "How is Admiral Janeway, Wulfgar?"

"I do believe she is doing great. I personally haven't met her myself but she's working at star fleet headquarters." Wulfgar stated as their coffees arrived. He motioned for Vereelix to try the coffee. "I don't know if you have had a chance to try coffee before but this is my favorite way to have it." He smiled as he took a sip of his hot, steaming beverage.

Vereelix took a sip, "This is interesting," he said as he smacked his lips before sipping again. "This is almost as good as the tea made from the secretions of the TakoWoma Worm on Sentile Prime "

Wulfgar smiled, having never tried this tea he was unsure if he liked it or not. "I'm glad you approve my friend. I know your people tend to be traders and we are in need of some parts. Do you know if Neelix or another Telaxian might be on this side of the Delta Quadrant and able to assist us?" He asked, getting down to business.

"I do not, my people are wanderers, I came on a scientific vessel, but I think if we head towards civilization and away from the Dead Space we should find someone," Vereelix answered

"Hmmm. I thought Telaxians were typically traders." Wulfgar said as he sat back thinking. He took a swallow of his cooling coffee. "Well, we'll see if we encounter anyone." He smiled. "I heard that telaxians love to tell stories. If you share one with me, I'll share one with you." He raised his coffee cup in a salute before he drained it.

"Traders or wanderers we get around either way," Vereelix said with a laugh. "A story you say, how about this one. Every year there is a holiday called Prixin. We celebrate the passing of our loved ones and their joyous arrival at the Guiding Tree of the Great Forest. We believe our ancestors great them at this tree. During this celebration we pray that our ancestors continue to watch over us."

Vereelix took a sip of his coffee before continuing, "There was a mean kid err I think you would call him a bully. Either way there was a bully in my teenage years who had harassed most of my friends because we were more studious um, I believe you may call it nerdy. We got a hold of some phosphorescent spore from a night lily and dressed up as the bully's dead great father, the father of his father, that had passed away. We told the bully his grandfather was not proud of his ways and to quit picking on people. To this day the people of my town really think it was his great father. Only my friend Cerlixin and I know the truth."

Wulfgar let out a hearty laugh at the story. "That's great! I wish I could have been there to see that." He waved over to get a refill before looking at Vereelix. "We have a day that we celebrate similar to Prixin. We call it Halloween or all Hallows Eve. The original reason for the day was because ancient humans believed the barrier between our world and the spirit world are the thinnest. On this night it was believed that spirits and evil creatures could cross over."

Wulfgar nodded to the hostess as she refilled his cup. "We would hollow out these gourds called pumpkins with scary faces and put light sources inside them. People would dress up in scary costumes to scare the spirits away and would set out treats like cakes and candy as offering to the spirits to leave them alone. Now we just dress up, go door to door and ask for candy and sweets." He explained as he sipped his coffee. "One day when I was about 14, my two buddies and I decided to get retribution on the bully we had. We all dressed up in black and painted our skin black as well. We then hid in the bushes near a cemetery as we knew the kid and his friends would be in the area taking the candy from the other kids. We waited until the bullies were heading into the cemetery to divide the candy when we started our prank. We all were in different bushed with a small handful of pebbles and we would toss one at them and made spooky sounds. We didn't do it all at the same time mind you but would take turns. When they would move to investigate where one rock had come from the other two would throw one."

Wulfgar took a larger drink before he continued. "They were confused as every time they would try to find us, we would move as quietly as we could around. Thank goodness that it was late at night and there wasn't any moon out so it was very dark. I had built a voice changer out of spare parts and used it to disguise my voice. 'You have angered the spirits with your cruelty of others. If you do not change your ways, we and many more spirits shall haunt you for all time. Then when you pass, your own spirits will be forsaken to reside on earth and never know peace!' I had said and a few of his friends threw the candy they had on the ground and took off running. It was just him and one other of his friends, who wasn't the brightest, left. We all stood up and in the darkness all they say was three shadows rise up surrounding them. The big guy screamed and ran then but the bully stayed put. There was fear on his face but he was frozen in place. That is until we all opened our eyes all the way and the sight of eyes seemingly appearing in the dark masses was the trigger. He let out a scream threw the candy at us and took off running. When we turned our flashlights on, there were a couple of puddles where some of them had been standing." He chuckled at the memory. "We had scared them so bad they pissed themselves but they stopped picking on people after that." He sat back, smiling.

Vereelix laughed loudly slapping his knee, "That is most funny, and an excellent story, Wulfgar. Scaring the water out of anyone is quite an accomplishment. Reminds me of the time, me and a friend dressed up as Borg; we scared my greatfather, but he had the last laugh at he whacked us over the head with his walking stick. He said youth may be quick of body, but elders are quick of mind."

Wulfgar nodded and chuckled. "Aye, my papi use to say something similar to us kids as well." He smiled at the Telaxian. "What do you like to do for fun?" He asked as he took a few more drinks of his coffee.

"I enjoy reading, and learning especially from other cultures, its why I volunteered to come aboard the ship, What about you?" Vereelix asked.

Wulfgar sat back and thought a second. "Well, I like to workout in the gym, the outdoors, reading and hanging out with friends." He said with a smile. He sat forward and drained his second cup of coffee. When he sat it down he placed it upside down on the saucer. " Thank you for the story. I need to get back to Engineering. Have a great day Vereelix." He clapped the Telaxian on the back before he left yen forward and returned to Engineering.
