Meeting the Department Heads - Chief Engineer

After speaking with the Chief Operations Officer Naomi headed out and into the nearest Turbo lift and the moment the doors closed "Main Engineering" she said and she was taken to the area that opened out onto the engineering level.

As she stepped out she got a few strange looks from the officers and enlisted she passed all nodded politely, she may have been a Marine, but she was an officer. Putting the unease aside she walked down the corridor and turned down into another and soon she was standing outside Main Engineering, and then she entered Engineering, she was in wonder in all her time in service she had never been inside an engineering room like this, she was acting like a tourist, but she was taking in what she was seeing.

Finally gathering herself she took on a more composed stance and was studying a console, but touching nothing, then someone behind her spoke.

"Excuse me but may I help you...", Arianna asked.

Looking up and turning around "hello, quite a place you have here Commander, I have never been in an engineering room before, still, it has more space than my Academy quarters," Griffiths said she was delaying giving her name.

Laughing softly, "Well.....Major, I believe.....as your rank indicates, I can give you a guided tour if you would like. Right now we are conducting Level 1 diagnostics across the board. I want to make sure the engines don't blow us up!", Arianna said.

Also laughing "A wise tactic Commander, I am here to introduce myself and try to get to know the Department Heads, I am Major Naomi Griffiths ships First Officer and you are Lieutenant Commander Arianna Sky Chief Engineer pleased to meet you," Griffiths said holding out her hand.

Taking the Major's hand and shaking it firmly, "I am honoured having you here in my engine room. Are you familiar with the warp core?", Arianna asked.

*smiling* "Familiar as in I know it emits a lot of power which is then moved to other systems which power the ship, unregulated it is worse than the atomics used during Earth's Third World War also, it is the ships main power source, beyond that I not seen one before, well not up this close and the holodeck versions I faced in training did not feel the same as being here in person in front of one, so from a point of view I have not been in front of a real warp core before, simulated, yes but never real" she said.

"Well, she is a thing of beauty. Sometimes her heartbeat lulls me to sleep in my office", Arianna said smiling. "Major is there something I can show you?"

Looking directly at the Chief Engineer at that remark "okay, what is this something that you can show me?", Naomi asked in a calm but wary manner, she never felt at home in engineering, she had learned to control her fear of the warp core by rationalizing that if one was to blow up the chances of surviving a warp core breach were minimal, it was a fatalistic view, but it helped her cope with her fear "lead the way Commander" she added.

Leading the Major to the main display board, Arianna explained its best parts. "Major, this is the main display board where we can monitor every system on the ship. Replicators, transporters, engines, both SIF and IDF fields as well as all emergency forcefields. We can monitor movements through the Jefferies tubes and crawl spaces on the ship. It would be hard for any intruder to stow away on the ship", Arianna said, smiling.

Looking down at the console and nodding "as a tactical thought Commander, you might want to focus visual devices on all the tubes as should we get boarded by hostiles at some point along with our mission in the DQ, it will be good for Security to know where to head to. I know you probably have done this, but find a way to store up reserve power for the reserve power, this may be a Science vessel, but I do not intend for any of us to die on it, and having back up power for our back up is tactically sound" she said then looking at the Commander with a smile "I will leave the logistics on those ideas to you" she added.

"Storing power is already accomplished by several battery units that are constantly being recharged. These units work in tandem with each other. They are programmed to recharge alternately rather than all at once. While one is running it recharges the other and so on. If they are needed to run continuously then the fission generators are delegated to help in the charge maintaining power as long as it is needed. Problem is....if I lose the fusion generators, then I have to reduce power to maintain power to essential systems", Arianna replied.

Nodding "interesting, still I am looking for ideas to optimise our survival odds in the DQ, of course my engineering knowledge is limited, so I need to rely on you Commander to come up with ideas that are efficient and tactically safe and easy to implement, can you do this Commander?" she asked.

"Major, I will not try to kid you or lead you into a false sense of comfort but, there is no way in hell I will let something befall my lady, Penny. I will die trying to make her fly home crew and all. I will do all I can do to keep this ship, and crew safe", Arianna said.

*smiling* "All I needed to hear Commander, all I needed to hear, so want to show me around the rest of this area?" Griffiths responded.

"Sure Major, let me show you around main engineering", Arianna said as she headed for the main display board.

She nodded and followed the Chief around engineering acting like a tourist, engineering had always fascinated her, but her academy tests had indicated one thing that she did not have the aptitude for the job, so she was stuck as a wide-eyed kid being shown around something wondrous letting the Commander lead her.

"So Major, how do you like her so far? I mean the Penny", Arianna asked.

*smiling* "She seems to be a nice ship and seeing the topside of a starship is a nice change, I like and it looks to me like all is in order here, and I am happy that all is under control Chief, so with that being said I will leave you to get on with what tasks you have left" Griffiths said and held out her hand.

"Major, anytime you want some peace and tranquility just come down hetecand hang around the core. The sound of her is very relaxing", Arianna said smiling.

"Well I have other tasks I have to do so I will go now," Griffiths said with a smile and with a polite nod left Engineering and headed to her next location.
