Mission: Onboarding & Departure
Location: Science Lab Deck 25
Timeline: Incidentals Day 003

Frank stepped out of the turbo lift carrying his Padd, onto deck 25 the Science Labs. This was his first visit to this area, he had meant to tour the space sooner but due to the large amount of administrative work and briefings he had been unable too. His current mission was to inspect the space and verify that everything appeared to be in ship shape.

There was alot of equipment that Frank couldn't identify a purpose for, ad some appeared semi-familiar. His days as an engineer did not help or provide any guesses as to what the equipment was for. Walking through the space Frank stopped at a console that showed details on the scanning array that had been installed. Forgetting his mission momentarily, he was awed by the vast information readouts that the advanced scanners provided. Frank couldn't wait until these displays showed information for new planets and discoveries.

"And remind operations that if they don't want me co-opting their sensor techs that they need to finish calibirating the subspace receivers before 0800 tomorrow," Ryan said handing the PADD back Ensign Summers.

"I'll do my best sir," Summers replied.

"Good morning sir, anything that I can help you with?"

"My apologies," Frank paused to view the uniform before continuing, "Lieutenant, I'm supposed to be doing a walkthrough of the science space so I can sign off on the refit repairs for this deck. Are you settling in here ok?" Frank asked curiously.

"So far so good," Ryan said. He indicated the display that Frank had been looking at when he came around the corner. "Interested in advanced quantum tunneling technology? That's the latest model from the Daystrom Institute about creating viable third space storage facilities."

"That is fascinating, but as an engineer at heart, I'm afraid it's a bit over my head. If I cant fix it with an old fashioned wrench or a spanner it's not for me," Frank joked. "I'm Commander Kamar, and you are Lieutenant?" he paused as he waited for the young Lieutenant to introduce himself.

"Lt. Ryan North," Ryan replied, extending his hand toward the other man. "It's good to meet you sir."

"Good to meet you too Lieutenant North, I saw you transferred over from the Churchill. Have you settled in ok?" Frank asked.

Ryan nodded. "Most of my personal belongings have arrived and I'm almost finished inventorying the supplies in the science lab. There are still some updates that need to be done to stellar cartography but that shouldn't take too long. After that we'll just need the latest LCARS patch for our long range arrays and then sciences should be up and running."

"Excellent, I'm glad to see you get up to speed quickly. What do you think of the Sensor array? Have you worked with one before?" Frank asked wondering what kind of information the advanced scanners would actually provide.

"My first assignment after the MACOs was aboard an Nebula class starship," Ryan said. "So, I've had a some experience with the systems, though deflector and sensor tech has advanced considerably since then."

"Outstanding North, I guess I will move along, I don't want to keep you from your work. Is there anything I can do for you or questions I could answer while I'm here?" Frank asked.

"Do you know if we have an assistant cheif science officer assigned yet?" Ryan asked. "Knowing might help me plan out my day a little better."

"I checked the roster earlier this morning and as of right now one has not been assigned to us. If I hear of one I will notify you immediately," Frank said as he continued, "What are you looking forward to most as we prepare to enter the Delta Quadrant?"

"I think what every starfleet officer is looking forward too," Ryan replied. "Seeing the unknown, probably."

“Well then you definitely came to the right place. I guess that’s what I’m most looking forward to myself. At my age this is probably my last outing on a Starship before I retire so I’m hoping to make the most of it. If we discover a new planet or race unvisited by Starfleet before I will retire happy. Most of the discoveries made during my career were made while I was in the engine room, so getting to be on the bridge will be nice,” Frank replied.

"Don't worry sir, I'm sure that you have a lot of years left in you. Miracles of modern medicine after all."

"Yeah but I've spent my prime in the belly of the beast, it's nice to be on top for a change," Frank said with a grin. "Anyhow, Lieutenant, I know you are trying to settle in so I won't tarry here. Before I go do you have any questions or concerns?"

"Not that I can think of sir," Ryan said. "If I need anything I won't hesitate to ask though. A bad habit I picked up in the MACOs. My COs hated me for being so damn out spoken. It's both a gift and a curse."

"Don't ever hold back, if there's one trait I admire it is Honesty. Never be afraid to speak up, even to me, I may get pissed, but I will respect your decision."

"My late husband used to say that a lot," Ryan said with a grin. "But don't worry, I won't hesitate to let you know what I think when I think it sir."

"I'm sorry you lost your husband, I know it's not easy losing a spouse. My wife June was pregnant, when she passed away. Not a day goes by that I don't think about her or the baby," Frank said to the man, opening up a bit more than he normally did, due to their shared grief.

"Thank you sir but he died doing what he loved. I'm sorry, losing your family is never easy," Ryan said. "But I'm happy to see that you didn't wallow in it, I've seen too man colleagues lose themselves in their grief."

“I can’t say I didn’t lose myself in the grief, the fact is last year would have been our twenty fifth anniversary and she’s been gone fourteen years. I really haven’t moved on as they say and Starfleet or her engines rather have become my mistress. I do hope one day to have a family or at least someone to share hopes and dreams but I’m almost 57” Frank said with a sad smile, “I don’t have many years left to share.” Frank took a deep breath before continuing, “Anyhow I believe we have some work to do. Is there anything I can do for you before I go?”

"I'm good sir."

"Well in that case I'll let you get settled in and will see you around," Frank said as he turned and left the Science Lab.
