The Checkup

Posted on Thu Oct 17th, 2019 @ 8:58am by Lieutenant Cyrin Xanth & Lieutenant Commander Yarinna "Fanthom" Hawkins & Lieutenant Commander James Trallos MD

Mission: Onboarding & Departure
Location: Deck 12 Sickbay
Timeline: 0900

James looked around his Sickbay. Things looked almost as they should. He had to move a few things around with the nurse and technician to accommodate almost a whole department coming in but for the crew, he can make it streamline more and get them back to their duty station in quick order. They would still get the full work ups, but he would not make them wait for results, he would call them in later privately.

The officers always took a little longer but he still felt he can keep the exam fairly short. He also liked to talk longer with the officers so he can get an idea of how they are handling the stress of managing a team. That would also let the computer and equipment get a preliminary result he can give to them before they go back to duty.

Cyrin stood near the back of the crowd of white-collared personnel, watched with a supervisory eye to make sure his team was on their best behaviour here. A few grumbled about the need for medical exams, but generally out of the Trill's hearing. Good thing too, as he'd been enthusiastic in arranging this with Doctor Trallos and Cyrin meant to have Flight Control as the first department with all their records and personnel up to date, ready to go.

"Thank you for this, Doctor," Cyrin said as walked over to the other man, smile on his face. "And let me know if anyone gives your staff any trouble please."

"My pleasure Lieutenant. It helps me get onto schedule. I'll keep you posted on their behavior, but so far it seems like you've got a tight crew. I'll get them in and out in no time." James said shaking the Trill's hand. "And as an officer's perk, feel free to help yourself to some coffee in my office." He excused himself and walked over to the central biobed in the center of sickbay.

"Ok Crewmen and women, line up along the biobeds on the port wall. Then one at a time step right up to the big biobed right here. First one in is the first one out." James said giving a little enthusiasm into the first one in line to try and encourage volunteers before he started calling them out by name. If there was a lull, he would pull a name off his PADD and bring them up.

Oh coffee. The doctor must've picked up on that real quick in their first meeting! With another flash of a grin, Cyrin wasted no time to go pour himself a cup, easily his greatest addiction. In the meantime the pilots and support staff cooperated as best as could be expected from a group of rambunctious and oftentimes loud personnel. He looked on from the office door, steaming mug in hand. Cyrin would get his own records updated today too, but for a moment he wanted to observe how his team behaved.

James started working his way through the flight crew. He had a couple volunteers but not many. He looked over his list and called up a name and started a workup. He noticed one of the pilots got a little mouthy. After a quick glance at his PADD and matched his image up, James called his name up next. James began the workup and in the middle of one of his showy complaints he picked up the reflex hammer and clubbed him in the knee causing his leg to jerk and drew an "ouch" from the pilot and a laugh from the crew watching. James asked if he was going to need to check reflex in both legs. The pilot rubbed his knee, laughed and gave said he was ok. The pilot became a perfect example of a patient. After he was done the rest of the crew started volunteering. One by one they worked their way through, gave their test samples and were out the sickbay doors.

Cyrin poured a second cup of coffee, figured that James wouldn't mind, and walked it over to where Yarinna stood in line. If it was an officer's perk, well, she outranked him! He now found that amusing and had a smile as he approached. "Would it be too harsh," he asked as he handed her the mug, his voice low and close to her ear so the rest of the team wouldn't overhear. "If Ensign Cooper was up first for shuttle bay maintenance and cleaning?" Cyrin might be serious, referencing the young man that had given the doctor a bit of trouble at first. The man had handled it with amusing poise, certainly, but still, he'd told them all to behave.

The rest of the flight crew seemed to have gotten the point pretty easily, and didn't need a repeat. The line started to move neat and orderly. Cyrin was impressed, reminded him of the ruthless efficiency of Starfleet Academy during those first few days. All those hypos and tests... The Trill grinned a bit wickedly when one of the shuttle pilots started to look a bit green in the face as his blood was drawn, then had to be helped out by his laughing friends on unsteady feet. There was always at least one.

Whispering back to Xanth, "Yes", she said giggling. "He was warned and he still gripped". Yarinna was proud of her boss in the way he had volunteered everyone for physicals. It showed leadership and a willingness to make his department look good.

"I believe doctor I am next", she said winking at Xanth.

The Trill grinned back at Yarinna, and took their cups of coffee over to a replicator for disposal. Okay, so they'd give Cooper a little slap on the wrist, he should have known better. Still, he was impressed with both his staff and with Doctor Trallos. This had all turned out nearly perfect. He took his spot at the back of the line and quietly waited his turn.

"Thank you Commander. I'm sorry that I got busy and missed seeing you come in. I have coffee in my office for the officers. Your welcome to some after we're done." James said with a smile as he glanced at the PADD. "How are you feeling Commander? Looks like your chart is missing an item or two. Betazoid I see. Do you observe most traditions"

"Yes and no", Yarinna said giggling. "Being half Human I enjoy a large variety of food that humans eat. Sure I enjoy my native foods but I find that hamgurgers and apple pie are more tasty and more to my liking. When it comes to weddings......there I draw the line. It is both traditions intertwined", she added. "As for how do I feel.....I feel exhilarated and full of energy", she added smiling.

James returned the smile. "Excellent. I'm glad your feeling so good. Just for my records, if you have to stay in sickbay for any length of time, and I hope you don't have too, but would you like me to make sure I have a gong available for your meals? I mean, not that I don't want you to come down to sickbay, your welcome anytime, I just mean in a sick/injured sort of way. Ok, none of that came out the way I wanted it too, but I hope you understand what I mean." He cleared his throat. He figured less talking might be better out of him. Butchering a simple phrase like that would not instill much confidence in his medical practice probably. James ran his hands into a sterile field and began to touch under her jaw and along her neck checking for any swelling of glands. "Anything causing you any problems?"

"No, I am not experiencing any pain or discomfort. And I appreciate the gong. Yes I do use the gong in my quarters when I am alone and eat at home", Yarinna said chuckling.

"Well then, I will make sure I have one available here just in case." James replied. "Well, I think I am almost done here Commander. I just need to take some blood for the analyzer and I can get you back on your way. I hope this was not too big an inconvenience."

"Oh no Doctor you have been very kind and very considerate. It was not an inconvience at all. It was an interesting visit and since my boss, in this case made it almost an order I figured it best to get it done asap", Yarinna said smiling.

Cyrin grinned silently, but he seemed amused at the comment. They were almost there! Once the last pilot, the one actually at the helm now got down here for his medical check that would be that. The team had already given the shuttles and inventory assigned to their department thorough checks before they'd reached the catapult in the alpha Quadrant. Now all that would be last would be delivering his training and duty schedules to the Major for approval, and Flight Control would shine for all their hard work! He stood up from his lean against another bio bed, ready for his turn.

"Thank you for arranging your department to come in so soon and so early. It makes my job a lot easier." James said offering the biobed to Cyrin. "How are you feeling today?"

As the Trill hopped up on the biobed he shook his head, "Glad to help, Doctor, and I'm glad they weren't too much trouble. Been feeling alright, nothing worse than what a couple of nights of real sleep could handle."

James looked over his PADD and the master display on the biobed. "Sleep is a big component. A lot of people ignore that. I see your joined. Anything causing either of you to have problems getting that sleep you need?"

"Just not enough hours in the day, Doc," Cyrin shrugged. "Not a lot of time to get everything ready before we left. Although, I'm concerned about potential allergens in the Delta Quadrant; Xanth is sensitive to that." He'd placed an arm around his abdomen in an unconscious defensive gesture.

"That is a very valid concern." James nodded and walked over to a shelf. He picked up something and walked back. "I was wondering if you had a hypo. I do not want you to go anaphylactic on me so keep this with you at all times." James said giving Cyrin a med hypo. "If you run across any insects that you and Xanth don't agree with, use this hypo. It's got a little something in it that will buy you some time. It won't cuter you, but it will give you enough time to beam up and get to Sickbay or a med center where we can get you fixed up."

"Perfect." Cyrin too the hypo gladly, turned it over a few times to read the settings. This should do nicely though he hoped to never use it, as he recalled from candidate training the warnings about disruptions to the neural connections between his two brains. "I'll remember my bug spray
If I go on any away missions too. Everything else checks out? You're not about to tell me this'll be my final mission or anything?"

"I think you'll be fine. So fine you won't even need to miss a shift." James smiled. " Just need a little blood and your free to go."

"Aw, and here I thought you weren't a vampire," Cyrin grinned back as he rolled up the sleeve of his uniform to offer his arm. "You Starfleet doctors, sometimes I wonder what you really do with all the blood you draw," he joked.

James laughed. "Well I can assure you it is not to build an army clones. It's just not cost effective to do that." He drew the blood smoothly and gave it to the technician. "I'm afraid all I do with the blood is analysis and more analysis of it. Pretty much as described. There we go, all set lieutenant."

"Well, I guess that's that then." He slid off the biobed and lowered his sleeve, then offered his hand to the other man again. "A pleasure doing business with you, Doctor. Let me know if you have some free time to go over some ideas about cross-training too; medics with shuttle flight certifications, pilots that know first aid... I think it could work well!" Already Cyrin was thinking of the next way to work his team hard. "Anyways, I'll go relieve the helm now, send my last ensign to see you ASAP."

"That sounds good Lieutenant. I can get them cross trained for basic first aid and trauma pretty quick I think." James reached out his hand. "If you need anything else just let me know or feel free to stop in."

"Well boss how did we do?", Yarinna said looking at Cyrin.

With a final little salute after their last handshake, Cyrin headed out of Sickbay with Yarinna, "All in all, I think that went really well. I'm proud of the team overall, and I'd be surprised if any medical problems do pop up. Now, let's go have a chat with Cooper..." His grin turned a little wicked as they left and his imagination got to work about the worst cleaning duties he could come up with.
