Reboot

Posted on Sun Nov 8th, 2020 @ 1:52am by Lieutenant Commander Arianna Sky Kamar & Chief Petty Officer "Chief" Alpha I CSH

Mission: Season Two - Incidentals
Location: Observation Lounge

Frank stood in the observation room looking at Iota Station and the Graviton Catapult, the machine that got them to the Delta Quadrant was disabled due to an accident. The chirp of the computer interrupted his train of thought, *LCARS system online* "Excellent," the captain said aloud, "Computer, check the chief's core. Verify the data is intact and able to boot please." While he waited Frank refilled his Chai tea and continued to review damage and repair estimates on his PADD.

After a few moments, the computer chirped once again and replied in the standard, cool female voice "Diagnostics complete. Selected program showing signs of degradation. Memory core corruption detected, corrupted files isolated for further diagnosis. Holoemitter system functional, core systems functional..." The computer continued to list off the rest of Chief's core systems for a few more moments, until it reached it's final statement and analysis. "Program functionality rated at 67%. Attempting program initialisation"

A figure began to flicker and stutter into life a few steps away from Captain Kamar. Eventually the form stabilised, the image of Chief stood in the room.

"Program initialisation complete. System corruption detected. Diagnostic mode enabled, core systems enabled only" Chief said blandly, without the more complex personality sub-routines working the program was just a shell of what it once was. "This program will continue to operate on core functionality. It is recommended to return this program to Jupiter Station for more thorough testing and repairs." Chief remained standing, staring at the space in front of him but not truely seeing.

Frank smiled under his beard, it was good to see the Chief again, there was some damage because of the loss of the core, but they had taken backups with isolinear chips as Chief learned and integrated with the ship. Bringing him back online would be a big help as they worked their way through the repairs.

"Chief, if I used the most recent backup on the isolinear chip would it fix your damaged functionality?" The captain asked the hologram.

The program paused for a few moments, calculating the outcomes "Many of this program's subroutines and memories could be restored by using backups. However, some features may not be available due to physical damage to ship's systems." The program replied blandly, still looking ahead "This program would operate at 82% efficiency with backups restored. Physical repairs would be required to achieve 100% efficiency"

"Standby Chief," Frank said before hitting his Comms badge.
=/\=Commander Sky-Kamar, come to the Observation Lounge, please I need your assistance. =/\=

=/\=On my way=/\= came her reply. Arianna hurried to the Observation lounge post haste. Entering, "What's up Fr.....oh I see you got him online. How much damage did he sustain?" she asked her husband.

"He has basic functions, but most of his personality and non-essential functions are disabled. I'm thinking we can try to restore from the backup we made before he was shut down. What do you think Arianna?"

"Yeah, I think it will work. Let's give it a try. I kinda miss him too you know," Arianna said.

Chief just stood in the room, staring straight ahead. Without his more complex subroutines, Chief was just awaiting input from an external source. So he just stood, waiting for another command.

"Hang tight Chief," Frank said as he began to program the backup to overlay Chief's current system. Several minutes later he spoke, "Chief begin diagnostics on your system."

"System diagnostics beginning." The hologram stated in a toneless voice, still staring ahead unblinking "Core systems semi-functional, secondary systems compromised, detecting physical damage with ship systems. Interface with main computer successful and strong, interface with secondary computer core not found. Memory core corrupted, missing files detected..." Chief continued to list off all of the damage to his system, he was not in a good shape overall "Current system functionality rated at 67%, it is recommended to return this program at Jupiter Station for full system repairs." Chief rounded up at last.

"There's no way to go to Jupiter Station, we can figure this out, Chief give me some time." Frank continued sitting at the computer "Computer show a graphical display of the portions of Chief's programming that was damaged. Now cross-reference these areas with the three most recent backups." He watched the screen as small multi-coloured squares appeared across the screen.

"Chief, can we graft the bad sections of code with these ones?" Frank asked hoping to be able to mostly piece Chief back together.

"Recompiling this program with backups may be possible, however, some memory loss may still be present due to damaged segments in the memory core" Chief replied "Physical damage will prevent certain functions from operating correctly. Ongoing repairs can be made in order to restore some of this functionality"

The computer core has been replaced, we may just have to deal with some memory loss to get this up and running, Frank thought. "Computer begin compiling the data from the backups, notify me when it is complete."

Arianna was watching her husband work, "I hope I can finish the physical repairs he needs Frank," she said, hoping she could actually pull it off.

"We can hope, we really need his help Arianna," he said softly as he watched his wife tinker with the panel. "It looks like the restore is finished, here goes nothing."

"Computer begin reboot Chief protocol" Frank watched Chief disappear and then reappear moments later as his programming was recompiled with missing pieces of data.

"Chief, diagnosis please," Frank said waiting to hear what the hologram would report.

"I hope his diagnostic comes back with a positive note Frank, I have no idea what else I can do," Arianna said.

"Diagnostic protocols active" Chief said, somewhat sounding like his old self and less of a monotone drone "Backup graft currently at 70% effectiveness and increasing. Rerouting around damaged components and corrupted memory cores" He added. Suddenly, Chief started to flicker in and out of phase, his body becoming totally see-through for several seconds. As quick as it happened, it stopped again but this time Chief was different. There was a look of confusion and concern on his face as if he had suddenly woken up from a long sleep.

"Captain Kamar? What's going on?" the Hologram asked, his voice reflecting the worry on his face "I am detecting several errors within my program, as well as memory loss and physical damage"

"Hey Chief, we were attacked by Kazon and a computer core was damaged. We've done our best to rebuild your programming. Welcome back," Frank said to the hologram who looked more like his normal self.

Smiling, "Welcome back Chief, boy have you been missed. I've done the best I could with rebuilding your physical features. I hope you approve," Arianna chuckled.

Smiling at the Engineer, Chief replied: "I am sure that your work will be more than adequate Commander, we can make fixes as we need." He paused for a moment and looked down, his smile faltered somewhat "The physical damage will take some time to get used to, however, some of my more advanced features won't be available until we get that fixed. Given our current circumstance, that may be difficult." Turning to face Captain Kamar and Commander Kamar, Chief's smile returned once again "Though, I am sure with the help of this crew, I will be fully operational in no time"

"It's good to have you back, I will leave you in Arianna's capable hands, in the mean time I will be on the bridge," Frank said before heading to the bridge.
