SAR training Part 2

Posted on Thu Feb 27th, 2020 @ 9:47pm by Lieutenant Commander Arianna Sky Kamar & Major Naomi Sylan Griffiths & Lieutenant Shri'Rao Sh'veqan & Lieutenant Commander James Trallos MD & Chief Petty Officer "Chief" Alpha I CSH

Mission: Discovery
Location: Holodeck 1
Timeline: 239401.31

[On]

"Computer activate Program Sh'Veqan Sar 3, level 1". Shri'Rao said.

The Holodeck activated and the environment changed radically. weapons fire could be heard in the background, and the smell of smoke from the downed shuttle was evident.

*clears throat* "Before you all begin, I would like to say the reason why we have these teams, is because out here in the Delta Quadrant back up is not so easy to come by, so SAR, QRT and Hazard teams will be formed, the QRT or Quick Reaction Teams will be an established presence on this ship, they will be a mix of Starfleet Security and the few marines we have onboard. The SAR and Hazard teams will be assembled as and when required. It is for these you are all receiving cross-departmental training so should we need a specific team make-up we will have the personnel to make a team out of. For these Fleet personnel will take a prominent role as they number more than us marines, you will also be doing this to help protect this ship, are there any questions before I let the Lieutenant take you through your paces?" Griffiths said.

Shri'Rao, tricorder in hand thanked the Major for her input. "Thank you, Major".

"Looks like the shuttle is 1/2 a kilometre away bearing 070. That direction the Andorian said and pointed.

Sharif looked around the assembled crew before them, a mix of fear and excitement was worn across most of those present, especially among the younger crew. It was a look he had seen many times over, the nervous anticipation before going into a potentially hostile environment. This was just the calm before the storm, soon enough the nervousness would give way as Starfleet training and adrenaline kicked in, he just hoped that it happened sooner rather than later.

Arianna stood ready, nervous, no but concerned. Her years of training afforded her the handle on her nerves. Concern was there as every task is a new situation. Ears, eyes always scanning, her mind open to see if she can sense any presence. Walking with the group she studied the terrain.

Shri'Rou used her tricorder and noted that there seemed to be a dampening field relatively close to them.

"Seems to be a transporter inhibitor in effect. If we don't take it out, we won't be able to beam out of here." Shri'Rao said.

"I'll need two volunteers to come with me to take them out" Shri'Rao added.

"Mr Sharif do you have the TR-120's available?" Shri'Rao asked.

Sharif nodded as he walked back to some of the equipment cases behind him. Opening one of them up, he pulled out a shiny and sleek looking rifle, it was a little bulkier than the standard Phaser rifle but looked even more deadly. "Alright, listen up all," Sharif said as he began handing out the weapons "These are the new TR-120Ls, the updated version of the TR-116s. As some of you may know, these weapons fire a chemically propelled projectile and don't require any form of power to operate" he returned to the rifle Case and began handing out some of the TR-120s ammunition magazines "Usually, these projectiles are lethal only, but since this is a Holodeck all wounds will be simulated. Make sure you identify any targets before firing, you don't wanna accidentally shoot a friendly with these" While it was still a Holodeck with the safeties on, a simulated wound would still hurt, it was similar to being hit with a rubber pellet.

After handing out all the magazines and weapons, Sharif looked back at the group "I know a lot of you aren't qualified for use on the TR-120s yet, that is why we are using the L version, it is the most similar to the old TR-116. Take a moment to get acquainted with the rifles, if you have questions, ask me" Sharif nodded towards Lieutenant Shri'Rao, letting her know he was done.

"I am not a marine but I will volunteer to go with you," Arianna said to Lieutenant Shri'Rao.

"Thank you, commander, your technical knowledge will be a great asset, anyone else?" Shri'Rao said.

As their training began Griffiths looked over to the Captain "shall we leave them to do their training in peace Captain?" she asked.

“I would Major, but I have volunteered to be a casualty to assist with the training. I’m going to jog ahead to the crash site and await my rescuers,” Frank said with a lopsided grin, “ Depending on how slow they move I may get me a nap.”

*smiling* "understood Captain, I will return to the bridge," Naomi said as the Captain joined in the group while she returned to the bridge.

Meanwhile back with the training group...

Another security officer volunteered.

"Good, you're with us, grab a Phaser rifle and follow me, The rest of you make your way to the shuttle."

Arianna picked up the Phaser rifle and followed her assigned group. Funny thing, for some reason it felt good in her hands. Good weight and evenly balanced. oO You know I could get used to this thing. Bad idea Arianna you might accidentally shoot it Oo she thought.

Shri'Rao and Arianna made there way about 500 meters northwest of their current position. There was no trail, but it wasn't hard to get through as it was a forested area. They followed a stream which leads them to a clearing with a cliff. The cliff provided an excellent view of the transporter inhibitor which looked like a cell tower. it was gauded by two Hirogen hunters.

"Look at that I think we hit pay dirt, Commander", Shri'Rao said. "I think you are going to get to use that rifle after all. You take the one on the left and I'll take the one on the right."

"Kap'la! Hunting time. Very good", Arianna said taking careful aim

They were only 60 meters away and the trio had good cover. They took their time aimed carefully...

"Fire."

Shri'Rao dropped her mark.

Squeezing the trigger, her quarry dropped silently. Arianna smiled. Looking at Shir'Rao, "Nice shot Lieutenant," she added.

"Thank you! Same to you. Now let's get down there and make sure it will not inhibit our transporter function. "

Shri'Rao and Arianna shimmied down the cliff and indeed made good time.

"Should we blow it up or can you rig it to inhibit Hirogen transporters while not affecting ours?" Shri'Rao asked.

"Well we don't want to let them know we are here so blowing them up is out of the question. So I will just have to disable them. So we rewire them so they will inhibit the Hirogen transporters", popping the tiny panel and reworking the main relays to a Hirogen frequency, negating the Starfleet transporter dampening field frequencies, " and bingo there we go. All done. One final check" runs her tricorder over it and smiles. "All done", Arianna said quietly.

"Excellent, you do very good work Commander, let us get to the shuttle as fast as possible," Shri'Rao said.

"Shuttle group, remember your ABC's when you find a victim and you have done your initial site and patient survey." The doctor said adjusting the phaser on his hip and the medkit on his shoulder.

Sharif nodded to the Doctor, he was also qualified as a Combat Medic, so he remembered the Triage process quite well. "Sir, we should probably get moving soon, we don't wanna give the Hirogen any more time to get to the shuttle," he said As he pulled on a backpack, containing various combat supplies. While Sharif was helping lead the exercise, Trallos still outranked him, so he let the Doctor take the lead

The doctor nodded. "Keep your 120's close. You can't rescue anyone if you need rescuing yourself." He said and lead the way through the brush. As the approached the wreckage, James held up his hand and squatted down. Motioning for the rest of the team to follow. "Ok, we're close. Check-in with the scout team. If the scene is secure, then look for survivors. If not, help make the scene secure."

Sharif nodded, he checked that his rifle was secured to his chest and that it was loaded. He stood still and waited, attempting to spot any movement or disturbance around him, but nothing was obvious at that time.

Shri'rao and Arianna were about two minutes behind team one on the other side of the shuttle and stopped at the edge of the clearing. She could see the damaged shuttle but didn't detect any Hirogen life forms in the immediate area.

"What do you think Commander"? Shi'Rao asked.

"Shhhhhhh! We are not alone. Not sure how many but I can sense their presence," Arianna said. "We need to be as silent and as invisible as we can", she said as her Klingon senses became acute. The shuttle looked badly damaged and to fully estimate the damage would require them to become visible and that was not a good thing. "What kind of cover do we have if we move a few meters to the right? I don't want to be out in the open if we can help it", she said looking at Shi'Rao.

"Sound tactical thinking, Commander. Perhaps we should swing around and come at this from another direction. Shri'Rao suggested.

Walking around in the shadows, the hunter had eyes on its target. The Starfleet team had been easy to spot and even easier to follow, while they thought that they were being as quiet as possible, they'd made as much noise as a pack of raging beasts. He had been able to silently follow the team ever since it left the Starfleet camp, thanks to years of training and experience. Now the hunter moved like a predator, crouching low to the ground and slowly moving forward, closing the gap to his prey. The gentle breeze helped mask the hunter's scent, the mud he has smeared over his face and dark clothing masked him from sight, the hunter remained invisible.

The time to strike was near, but it was not yet. The hunter waited for a few moments more, taking the time to slow his beating heart and gather his strength. As time passed, the Starfleeters seemed to relax more, foolishly believing that they are safe. Now was the time to move in for the kill.

Springing to action, the hunter crept forward at a crouch, his weapon leading the way forward through the forest. Soon enough, he had halved the gap between him and his prey and yet they had not noticed the incoming danger. The hunter silently grinned, it would be the perfect kill.

At last, he had reached his target. Bringing his weapon to his shoulder, the hunter braced himself as he placed the tip of the barrel against the man in the real uniform, the one they called Trallos. "Bang. You are dead" 1st Lieutenant Vaebn i-Ra'tleihfi said, his voice cold but also dripping with venom

James swore in more than one language. "Not instantly. I'd give myself 25/75 to survive if the medics do what I trained them to do. Drop the barrel three inches and two to the left and you'd get your instant kill." James said with a friend. "So much for the perimeter. Search team, always guard your medics. They are the ones who will be occupied and the easiest targets." He said motioning to himself. "As you can see."

Vaebn lowered his weapon from where it was pressed against Trallos "And that is what made it so easy to track you. You're making too much noise and leaving too many tracks" he said with a nod over his shoulder, indicating the path that the Starfleet team had taken, the track was muddy and it was easy to tell it had been recently disturbed "If I was able to find you without any equipment, a fully geared Hirogen would be able to spot you from kilometres away"

Sharif wasn't liking the newcomer's tone and attitude, he had all the personality traits of a Romulan, believing that everything they do and are is superior to everyone else "With respect Lieutenant, this is a training mission. Our job is to educate people on how to do a better job, how to work on their mistakes" he said to the Marine, hoping to appeal to the better side of the Romulan if he even had one.

"You can't educate the dead, if people can't understand the simple principals in a training environment, they won't make it on the field" Vaebn shot back, clearly not impressed with Sharif's 'better nature's approach. Turning back to Trallos, he continued "This is your mission Doctor, how would you like to continue?"

"Well, that depends. This is a training mission. Was the 1st Lieutenant assigned to assist the Hirogren? Or is this supplement training offered by him?"

Shri'Rao stealthily rounded a tree 5 meters behind Vaebn.

"He is the right Doctor. To help people in a real-world environment we need to survive. That is exactly why we are here. To learn to move in situations that are dangerous to rescue our injured. Now the captain is in that shuttle. The Hirogen are closing. Let us get this mission done!" Shri'Rao instructed.

"Yes ma'am, you all heard the Lieutenant, form up and weapons out," James said as he took his position.

Shri'Rao watched as the SAR team closed on the shuttle and then went inside. They pulled out several bodies to stabilize them.

"Captain, can you hear me"? Shri'Rao asked.

Captain Frank Kamar was quite unconscious.

While the medical team worked on the downed survivors, Sharif monitored the perimeter and made sure that no one was sneaking up on the group, but he also kept an eye on the new Marine arrival, 1st Lieutenant i-Ra'tleihfi. Something about the man was untrustworthy, perhaps it was his eagerness to eliminate Sharif's team or perhaps it was simply because the man was Romulan. While Scott didn't subscribe to racism and stereotypes usually, it was always hard to trust someone that had been an enemy for a long time, especially one that was as deceitful as the Romulans. Sharif vowed to give the man the benefit of the doubt, but also not to turn his back on the man until i-Ra'tleihfi earned his trust.

Stalking around the crash site, making sure that the poor excuse of a perimeter that the Starfleeters had assembled was secure, Vaebn was aware of the eyes that shifted as he walked. He saw the distrust in those eyes, felt the tension in the air radiating from everyone, but it did not bother him. After joining the Marines and serving among Starfleet for so long, i-Ra'tleihfi was used to the distrust and unease others felt towards him it was something that he actively embraced. Being able to maintain a cold detachment from everything made it easier to move on, to cut ties with those that betray you and abandon you, a lessen Vaebn learnt all too well from his father.

For now, the crash site was quiet, except for the gentle sounds of medical equipment in use, but that could always change in a second. Even as the team worked, Vaebn knew that the remaining Hirogen could be moving to their location, the more time the recovery team spent here, the more likely that was to happen.

As the training mission completed, Frank couldn't help but be proud of his crew, they worked well together in a high pressure situation. "Keep up he good work," he said before exiting the holo deck.

The SAR team managed to rescue the crew and had them beamed to safety within the specified time.

The SAR team practiced for the next five days gaining proficiency and experience.
