Mission: Discovery
Location: Holodeck 1
Timeline: Jan 31 2394 0800

[ON]

Thank you for joining us for Sar training. My name is Lt Shri'Rao Sh'veqan (CSO)and this is my associate Lt Sinn Rintan (CIO). We have been tasked with providing you SAR training.

Search and rescue (SAR) is the search for and provision of aid to people who are in distress or imminent danger. The general field of search and rescue includes many speciality sub-fields, typically determined by the type of terrain the search is conducted over. These include starship rescue; mountain rescue; ground search and rescue, including the use of search and rescue animals; urban search and rescue in cities; combat search and rescue on the battlefield and air-sea rescue over water.

Starship search and rescue is the search for persons who are lost or in distress on a space vessel. People may go missing for a variety of reasons. Some may disappear voluntarily, due to issues like domestic abuse. Others disappear for involuntary reasons such as mental illness, getting lost, an accident, death in a location where they cannot be found or, less commonly, due to abduction. Let's face it space is dangerous with plenty of hazards both known and unknown. We initiate a phase ground search and rescue missions that occur on this ship or an alien ship in areas that should not be confused with "planetary search and rescue", which in many jurisdictions refers to the location and extraction of people from collapsed structures or other sections. A phase one search implies that the victim wants to be found.

Ground search and rescue is the search for persons who are lost or in distress on land or inland waterways. People may go missing for a variety of reasons. Some may disappear voluntarily, due to issues like political or domestic abuse. Others disappear for involuntary reasons such as mental illness, getting lost, an accident, death in a location where they cannot be found or, less commonly, due to abduction. Ground search and rescue missions that occur in urban areas should not be confused with "urban search and rescue", which in many jurisdictions refers to the location and extraction of people from collapsed buildings or other entrapments.

Mountain rescue relates to search and rescue operations specifically in rugged and mountainous terrain.

Combat search and rescue (CSAR) search and rescue operations that are carried out during war that are within or near combat zones.

Deciding to pop in and see how the training was going Naomi entered the holodeck after Rintan had spoken so she did not hear what he said. "hello everyone, don't mind me I am here to observe only" Griffiths said with a smile and remained behind the instructors allowing them to take the lead she was only here to observe so standing at parade rest she listened.

Shri'Rao nodded to the XO in acknowledgement.

Captain Kamar entered the holodeck as the Major said she was there for observation. He hoped to stand in the back and also observe but failed to state that upon his entrance. Standing there he absentmindedly put a cigar in his mouth and fiddled with it while the class continued.

"Captain on deck" Shri'Rao stated. "Welcome Sir". She added.

James was in the back with his team of medics. While he had volunteered for a team he also realized that he would also be better served to coordinate with multiple medics as an advisor, then actively being engaged in any one specific team. He did, however, want to make sure he was aware of the inner workings of all the teams that his people were involved in so if needed anyone member of his medic team could seamlessly integrate into another team.

"Doctor Trallos has graciously volunteered for this team and will act as an advisor and help train the medics in first and emergency aid. Captain Kamar has graciously volunteered to be our injured crewman in the practical application exercises. Mr Sharif do you have anything to add"? Shri'Rao asked

Sharif, who up until this point had been quietly standing beside his fellow Security members, stepped forward into the limelight. "There are many aspects that go into a SAR mission, some we can control and some that we can't. Unfortunately, it is impossible to teach you what to do in every scenario, we can only provide you with the base skills and tools to get the jobs done. You will need to be adaptable and work together to get the job done." Pausing for a moment, he looked around at the collection of people standing in front of him, listening to every word that he said "As Lt Shri'Rao said, time is of the essence in any SAR mission, minutes can make all the difference between life and death, a lesson that has been hard learnt over the years" he added in a dark tone, remembering back to all the previous SAR missions where they'd just been a few moments too late.

After clearing his throat, more as a means to dismiss those dark thoughts, Sharif continued "But, just as important is working together and keeping cool. Something that we all should be used to by now and something that seems easy in practice, but is much more difficult as time ticks away. Look to each other for strength, work with each other's skills and together you'll get the job done." Turning to the side a little, Sharif pointed to the rows of tools, weapons and equipment arranged behind him "I will be able to teach you how to use all of that equipment, but it's worthless if you don't work together and support each other. Now, I don't want to hold up this training any more than I have, so I'll sign off here and I look forward to working with you all" The Warrant Officer concluded with a quick nod, he then stepped back in line with the other instructors.

While Sharif was speaking, Chief materialised himself towards the back of the Holodeck. Although he wasn't able to assist in many SAR missions at all, being limited to the confines of a Starship or facility equipped with Holoemmiters, Chief always relished in the chance to learn and grow his program. Also, he thought he may even be able to provide some unique insights or advice after all his program contained various Tactical, Scientific and Medical databases.

Shri'Rao took the stage at that point.

"Mr Sharif is right. This is all about teamwork. What do I mean by that? Teamwork is the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal or to complete a task most effectively and efficiently. This concept is seen within the greater framework of a team, which is a group of interdependent individuals who work together towards a common goal.

Basic requirements for effective teamwork are an adequate team size. The context is important, and team sizes can vary depending upon the objective. A team must include at least 2 or more members, and most teams range in size from 2 to 100. SAR teams will be organized into teams of 5 based upon economy and requirements, and work teams may change in size depending upon the phase and complexity of the objective. Teams need to be able to leverage resources to be productive (i.e. playing fields or meeting spaces, scheduled times for planning, guidance from command or supervisors, support from outside organization's, etc.), and clearly defined roles within the team for everyone to have a clear purpose.

Teamwork is present in any context where a group of people are working together to achieve a common goal. These contexts include an industrial organization (formal work teams), athletics (sports teams), a school (classmates working on a project), and the healthcare system ( operating room teams) In each of these settings, the level of teamwork and interdependence can vary from low (e.g. minor accidents) to intermediate (e.g. diplomatic, recon), to high (e.g. rescue from hostile combat areas), depending on the amount of communication, interaction, and collaboration present between team members.

Does medical or command have anything to add? Shri'Rao asked.

"Yes Lieutenant," James said stepping forward. "All teams will be wearing a transporter band that will send biofeedback information to Sickbay. You will also have a backup for yourself if yours is damaged or if you find someone in a medical emergency, these can be applied to send information to medical ahead of time if a beam out is delayed for any reason. I'll go over the basic trauma kits I have had put together and show you how to administer emergency medications in specific situations." He said and stepped back with his med team.

"Thank you Doctor Trallos. Anyone else"? Shri'Rao asked.

“I have nothing to add at this time, I just hope that you don’t jostle me too much while I participate as the casualty. It is good practice that I hope we do not have to use,” Frank commented and then placed his unlit cigar in a silver case and then into his pocket.

"Aye Captain. The idea here is to train the crewmen here then they can go back and train their teams. for this exercise that captains shuttle has been involved in an accident involving the Hirogen. The simulation will involve a class M jungle type environment. Our objective is to find the shuttle Captain and crew before the Hirogen does. Sensors have located the shuttle but there is a Hirogen hunting party in the area. Any questions?

Arianna shook her head negatively and settled herself and waited for the simulation to begin.
