Mission: Discovery
Location: Security office/Armory
Timeline: 239401.30

[On]

Chief of Security had been very busy with investigations. Upon taking over as security chief she had a week to do an official inventory of both the security office and the Armory. She had asked Mr. Sharif to assist as he was Master at Arms and it was better to have two person integrity when taking inventory in any form.

Most of the actual files were digitized and were a matter of official record and therefore on the ODN network. Shri'Rao started on the body armor accounting for each item. She them moved onto phaser one's and two's. Then the TR-116 phaser rifles. There was much more equipment and a different type of phaser rifle.

"Mr Sharif what are these pointing to a different typer of rifle. I can't seem to access any data on them." Shri'Rao asked.

Sharif was in the middle of counting some of the smaller gear that the Security team used: Tricorders, Photon Grenades, hand phasers and so on, a task that had his complete focus. So much so, he barely registered the query that Shri'Rao had given him "Hmmm? What's up Lieutenant?" Sharif asked as he looked up from the table of equipment in front of him.

Shri'Rao looked at her PADD

"These rifles are they operational? The TR-120's I cant seem to access the information or specs on them"? Shri'Rao asked again.

Sharif set his own PADD down on the table before him and then manoeuvred around it so that he could get a better look at the information on Shri'Rao's PADD "The TR-120s are an experimental rifle, a proposed upgrade to the old TR-116. The schematics had been given to all ships heading into the Delta Quadrant, Starfleet felt that we would need an alternative to Phasers if we came across a race that used energy dampeners, such as the Hirogen or the Breen" he paused for a few moments, letting Shri'Rao absorb that information before continuing "I assume that you haven't been qualified with the TR-120s, that's the reason why those files are locked for you" Sharif added, as diplomatically as possible

"Qualified? I've never actually seen one. Oh I had heard someone was working on an upgrade but I had no idea it was you Mr Sharif. Will you teach me?" Shri'Rao asked.

Sharif chuckled at Shri'Rao's comment "I helped with the upgrades and base designs, but I can't take all the credit for the weapon, others helped out as well" Sharif said with humility, trying to downplay his part in the project "As for training, I can help out with that of course, but probably not here though. It would be best to go to a Holodeck instead"

"Okay well then lets finish this then you can check me out on the TR-120." Shri'Rao said.

"Sure thing Lieutenant, I'm almost finished with my checklist anyway, it shouldn't take too long" Sharif said as he walked back to his station, grabbing his padd off of the table as he passed. Once again, Sharif went back to work on logging and checking the Security team's equipment.

"Excellent, we should probably take this to the holodeck though. That way you can give me practical training too." Shri'Rao said.

After you Mr Sharif.

Once they were done they both went to holodeck one.

Upon entering the large Holodeck, Sharif started working at the control console just next to the entrance, he was going through all of the Security department's training programs looking for the one he needed. After a couple of moments of looking Sharif found the exact program he needed, after a couple more taps on the console, he initiated the program.

Shortly enough, the yellow gridded space transformed itself into an expansive firing range. To Sharif's front, were a dozen different sheltered firing lanes, complete with interactive targets and controls to adjust the distance, movement and type of target displayed at the end of the lane. To his rear, the entrance arch had disappeared and transformed into a large armoury. The walls were lined with rows upon rows of different types of weapons, everything from Phaser rifles to smaller personal weapons, there was even a selection of non-federation weapons as well. In the centre of the armoury was a large table that could be used to service or customise a weapon, on top of the table sat several different riles, all of which was a version of the new TR-120.

As the program finished its initialisation, the control panel vanished from where it had been a moment ago, leaving the Sharif and Sh'veqan alone in the expansive room. Turning to face Shrirao, Scott let out a small smile "This is a holo-recreation of one of the Weapons testing ranges back on Jupiter Station. It should have everything that we need to get in some training". Sharif said.

"Great. Why don't you explain some of the new features of the TR-120. How is it different from the TR-116"? Shri'Rao asked. "It feels a little lighter and I like the grips". She added.

"Well for a starter, the TR-120 comes in two versions now." Sharif said as he followed Sh'veqan into the weapons locker, he pointed to the rifle that she was holding. It was the shorter of the two on the table, around 889 mm in length "That is the Light version of the TR-120, it fires a 7.62x51mm Tritanium round at around 625 rounds-per-minute. And this," Sharif said as he lifted up the slightly longer, thicker version of the TR-120 "Is the Heavy version. Firing a 10.36x77mm Monotanium slug with a lower fire rate of 600 rounds-per-minute. The Heavy packs quite a punch and has a much greater range, while the Light is better for general purpose fighting"

Setting the rifle back down on the table, Sharif looked back up to Sh'veqan "One of the core ideas of the project was to give the user more customization options and versatility. Both rifles can use a standard length barrel, for mid to long-range combat, or a shorter barrel for close-quarters" Walking over to one of the wall racks, Sharif grabbed a shorter barrel for each of the rifles and then headed back to the main table "The barrels can be changed in the field with ease and don't require any special tools, meaning that as the battle changes you can adapt with it. Also, both rifles can have a number of accessories attached to them, everything from custom optics to under-barrel grenade launchers, et caetera"

Sharif reached under the TR-120H and grabbed at its magazine, it released with a soft clicking noise as the locks disengaged "Not only do both rifles fire a different calibre round, they can also load different types of ammunition" He showed Sh'veqan the inside of the magazine and the rounds inside. The round on the left had a bright, crimson tip while the round on the right had a shiny, silver tip. Sharif pointed to the Red Tipped round first "The Red tips are a high explosive, armour piercing round. Once the round has hit a solid surface, the collision ignites the incendiary material in the tip of the round, which then triggers the detonation of the HE charge. The remaining element of the round is the monotanium slug. This has a large amount of kinetic energy and will penetrate the armour This will take the incendiary material and any fragments created by the explosives, delivering them through the armour increasing lethality."

Sharif then pointed to the round with the bright silver tip and continued "The Silver tips are a high-intensity tracer round, perfect for nighttime combat. The rounds are built with a small pyrotechnic charge in their base. As the round is fired, the pyrotechnic charge is ignited and slowly burns for about 90m, after which it begins to burn at full brightness." Placing the magazine down on the table, Sharif looked back at Sh'veqan "I hope I am not going to fast, do you have any questions so far?" he asked her

"Not at all Mr Sharif, You are very thorough and I appreciate that. I'm a safety gal myself. This is a very versatile weapon. How does it overcome electromagnetic shields? This weapon will be quite effective against the Hirogen. They wear energy dampeners that greatly attenuate colminated nadion particle beams. even if there force-fields deflect a round or two the explosive round will knock them into next week". Shri'Rao said.

She picked it up noticing its heft but thought she could use it effectively.

Her antennae shot up appreciated the elegance of it.

She put the weapon back down.

"I have read the specifications, is there anything else I need to know"? Shri'Rao asked

Sharif shook his head "Not particularly, if you are confident with the specs, stripping down the weapon and servicing it, understanding the modular attachment system and the major uses of the different versions, you should be good to go" he said with a small smile, it felt good to be finally able to use something that you had worked on for a long time "As for your question about shielding, as long as they are not specifically designed to screen for projectiles, the rifle will be fine. Most shields are only spec'ed for energy or radiation, for example, Borg drone shields are highly effective against energy based weapons but are unable to block kinetic rounds or attacks." Sharif answered, the older TR-116 was highly effective against the Borg, so the TR-120 should work just as well.

"When it comes to the Hirogen and energy dampeners, the rifle was field tested against a range of energy dampening scenarios, it performed well in every test. And yes, the High-Explosive rounds should be more than enough to punch through their armour, again it worked well against the Borg" Sharif added, hopefully satisfying Sh'veqan's questions.

Outstanding Mr Sharif, once we are finished here we need to get others qualified." Shri'Rao said.

Sharif nodded, appreciating Sh'veqan's enthusiasm "It's definitely on the cards Lieutenant, we can schedule some training for anyone that needs it. But first, let's finish off your training. We haven't even got to the fun part yet" he said, flashing an eager and mischievous smile towards Shri'Rao. Scott grabbed his TR-120H and some magazines from the table, he started to walk towards one of the firing lines directly opposite the armoury "Let's fire off a few shots, test your skills at handling the rifles. The H packs a bit more punch then you may be used to, it can throw off your aim of you're not careful" he said, half turning to see if Sh'veqan was following behind.

Shri'Rao Picked up her TR-120H and followed the Chief directly. Fun stuff indeed. This was the Lieutenants favorite part.

Moving into a firing lane, Sharif began setting up the target parameters by using a control panel built into the wall that divided the lanes. After a couple of taps, a large humanoid shaped target appeared 200m down the lane. The target contained several nested ovals, starting from the centre of the target and then moving outwards. Between each oval was a number, starting at 7 on the outer oval and then working up to 10 in the very centre of the smallest oval. Each number represented a score, the closer to the centre of mass, the higher the score.

Sharif stepped out of the firing alcove and motioned for Shri'Rao to take his place "Why don't you start off first. Begin with slow, single round bursts until you get a feel for the rifle. Then, we can move up to higher rates of fire" he said with a smile

Shri'Rao switched to single shot or semi auto. She fired of an aimed test shot noting the recoil and the feel of the weapon in her hand. Soon it became comfortable and she left a nice tight grouping on the target.

"It feels good; not as tight as the TR-116. I wonder if anyone has thought to put a transporter module on the end of this weapon. With the right scope you could shoot a projectile and then beam it directly to the target gauranteeing a kill shot."

Sharif nodded gently, he had heard of such a modification for the TR-116 "It certainly is possible to do, something similar was done in the past. However, we designed the weapon to work in situations where power packs wouldn't function, so it seemed redundant. Though, there's nothing stopping anyone from doing it" Sharif said thoughtfully, considering how it would be possible to make such a modification work "You'd most likely have to change the barrel out, fit it with a series of micro-transporters that activated as the round travelled. A enhanced targeting scope would also be beneficial. While the standard sights would work, if you're after precision you'd want something with a little more zoom" he added.

After a moment of silence, Sharif shook his head in an attempt to clear his thoughts and get back on track "Sorry boss, that's the weapon smith coming out, I see an idea and then want to make it" he said with a small chuckle. "Now that you've had a practice with some single fire, why don't you try full auto, just watch the kick and the vertical travel. I find that the rifle tends to pull to the left a little"

"I'll keep that in mind Mr. Sharif." Shri'Rao said.

The Andorian officer switched the TR-120 selector to fully automatic.

She then fired several short bursts at the target, the groupings were all over hte place and it did indeed pull high and to the left.

"I see what you mean", Shri'Rao said.

Sharif looked at the target and saw the slight trail of rounds climbing up to the left. However, Shri'Rao had done a good job of controlling the role, the initial couple of rounds hit fairly close to centre of mass, ensuring that they'd all be kill shots "You did extremely well Lieutenant, especially for a first timer. Once you get the hang of the rifle, those groupings won't travel as much. Keep to small 3 to 5 round bursts on full auto, you shouldn't have too much of an issue" he said with a warm smile, he was truely impressed with Shri'Rao's shooting skills.

"I don't think we need to fire the TR-120L, it controls much the same as the old TR-116s. Is there anything else that you want to ask or go over?" Sharif inquired, they had covered most of the basic use of the rifles already.

"No this is a very able weapon. All I need is certification, then we can begin instructing the rest of the crew."
